I have to tell you that working on a Preston Bailey Wedding with Marcy Blum was a great highlight in my career! Memorial Day 2006 in Newport, I worked with them on local logistics for a wedding weekend held at Rosecliff. He is a amazing artist and I envy the volume of flowers he gets to paint with.

When I was with Bizbash Media, we honored him in to The Event Style Hall of Fame.

Did you say Pique?

Yes! Pique is one of my favorite summer textiles. It was popular in the 1960’s worn by the preppy crowd. Pique is a tightly woven cotton fabric with various raised patterns, produced especially by a double warp that holds its shape very well.
When I saw this Carmela Sutera gown come down the runway, I thought this would make the perfect beach side/garden wedding gown!

It's simple and elegant in an Audrey Heburn sort of way.

There are also a variety of legends about the origins of the ring

One tale is about Margaret Joyce, a woman of the Joyce clan. She married a Spanish merchant named Domingo de Rona. She went with him to Spain, but he died and left her a large sum of money. She returned to Ireland and, in 1596, married Oliver Ogffrench, the mayor of Galway. With the money she inherited from her first marriage, she funded the construction of bridges in Connacht. All this out of charity, so one day an eagle dropped the Claddagh ring into her lap, as a reward.

Another story tells of a Prince who fell in love with a common maid. To convince her father his feelings were genuine and he had no intentions of "using" the girl, he designed a ring with hands representing friendship, a crown representing loyalty, and a heart representing love. He proposed to the maid with this ring, and after the father heard the explanation of the symbolism of the ring, he gave his blessing.

One legend that may be closer to historical truth is of a man named Richard Joyce, another member of the Joyce clan and a native of Galway. He left his town to work in the West Indies, intending to marry his love when he returned. However, his ship was captured and he was sold as a slave to a Moorish goldsmith. In Algiers, with his new master, he was trained in his craft. When William III became king, he demanded the Moors release all British prisoners. As a result, Richard Joyce was set free. The goldsmith had such a great amount of respect for Richard Joyce that he offered Joyce his daughter and half his wealth if Joyce stayed, but he denied his offer and returned home to marry his love who awaited his return. During his time with the Moors, he forged a ring as a symbol of his love for her. Upon his return, he presented her with the ring and they were married.

What should I wear to a Newport Wedding?

Newport has a great history of protocol and proper attire. So if you want to fit in at all the right places, here is a guideline on what to wear and when.

Formal Evening
After 6 pm Men white tie and tails, Ladies ball gown.
State Dinners and Balls have this dress code.

Formal Day
Before 6 pm Men morning suit, Ladies business dress, suit and a hat is always welcome.
Think of the movie Four weddings and a Funeral . White dinner jackets may be worn as well in the summer months.

Semi-Formal
PM Men black tie tux, and in the summer white dinner jacket may be worn and Ladies gowns or fancy cocktail dress.
For most Americans this is formal attire.
AM Men dress suit, Ladies "Sunday Best"

Black Tie Optional
I never under stood this; it’s a mix of Semi- Formal and Formal

Cocktail Attire
also known as Dress Casual or Smart casual
Men Suites, Ladies short cocktail dress

Yacht Club Attire
Men navy blazers and khakis,or bright green or red pants, Ladies summer tea dresses or summer suites
Lilly Pulitezer dresses and red white and blue is always a good choice

It must be my theatre background.

They can Customize dance floor,
make a ballroom look like a forest
or inscribe in light, your brand new monogram.

Recently I worked with a New York bride that had her Scottish Crest created for the wedding.

Jackie Kennedy's wedding gown designer, Ann Lowe

The wedding gown on the right was worn by Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, the day she married John F Kennedy. It is a part of African-American History. Why? This dress was designed by African-American fashion designer Ann Lowe.

Ann Lowe was born in Alabama in 1899, the daughter and granddaughter of dressmakers who designed for Alabama's first ladies. When Ann was 16 her mother passed away, and Ann completed the projects her mother had been working on. She then went on to design school in New York, where she was shunned by her white classmates. She didn't let them get to her. Instead, she concentrated on her studies. It paid off. Her customers included the DuPonts, Roosevelts, Posts, Biddles, Rockefellers, Auchinclosses, and other families that were listed in the Social Register. They loved her work. She was known as "society's best kept scecret," because, of course, no one would admit their clothing was being designed by a black woman. I can't help but wonder how different her life and career would have been today. Perhaps she would have been as well known and has wealthy as Vera Wang.

Things were, indeed, difficult for Ms Lowe. She never gave up, however, especially when a ruptured water line flooded her store 10 days before the future First Lady's wedding, destroying the dress and all others that had been made for the occasion. But Ms Lowe managed to remake all the dresses in time for the wedding. Later, in 1962 she lost her store due to back taxes, and lost her eye due to glaucoma. After the glaucoma surgery, when she was released from the hospital, she found that an annonymous benefactor had paid her all her debts. (The Kennedys, perhaps?) However, she developed cataracts in her other eye. Luckily, surgery saved the eye and she went ahead with plans to open a store on Madision Avenue. She retired in the '70s and passed away in the early '80s.

I have seen pictures of the wedding dress before, but they were always side views. I had thought there was only one circle detail on the side, but they seem to be all around the dress. To be honest, I don't really care for the dress. (Neither did Jackie, I've read. Her mother insisted that she wear it.) However, none of that matters today. What matters is that Ann Lowe be recognized for who she is: an African-American Fashion Pioneer.

When the Pilgrims landed they were not aware that lobsters, which were plentiful in the 1600's, were delicious to eat. The Native Americans dug a large hole in the sand. Placed in the pit were smoldering rocks. They boiled a length of rawhide to use as a cover then placed in it lobsters, clams, mussels, fish and corn draped with seaweed on top to steam.

Since most venues cant dig a hole for a fire pit, catering companys and resturants cook this dish as a New England Clam Boil in a large pots instead.

Mamie Eisenhower's Million Dollar Fudge

If I was to having a wedding at The Eisenhower' House i would considering making or having my caterer makeing this Fudge as a parting gift or placed in my wellcome bag . Once severed at the Summer White House, I think this is a wonderful way to incorporiate tradition and history in to your wedding day, Do included the recipy as well!

Mamie Eisenhower's Million Dollar Fudge

Ingredients:
12 ounces semisweet chocolate bits
12 ounces German sweet chocolate, broken into bits
1 pint marshmallow cream
pinch of salt
1 can (13 ounces) evaporated milk
4.5 cups sugar
2 cups chopped walnuts (or pecans)
2 tablespoons butter

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine both types of chocolate, marshmallow cream and salt. Put milk and sugar in a large pot. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring mixture over the chocolate. Add nuts and butter and beat until the chocolate is melted and the fudge is creamy. Pour into buttered 9"x9" pan and let cool at room temperature for a few hours before cutting into squares. Store in an airtight container. Makes about 5 pounds of fudge.

Leatrice Eiseman,the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said
“Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspects of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic.”

When I was at Special Event last year,

And yes iris blue, and fern green were defiantly being shown.

The Pineapple is a symbol of welcome derived from the practice of placing a real pineapple at the door to announce that the sea-captain owner had returned from his long voyage and was ready to receive guests.

So when the New England Society of NYC asked me to design the decor for the annual holiday party,the pineapple simple ruled.

The Eisenhower House

The Eisenhower House is a charming victorian farm house at the top of the hill in Fort Adams State Park.

It in now one of my favorite venues for a tented event.

Here is the History of the House.
Eisenhower House is a historic late nineteenth-century home that served as the residence for the Commandant of Fort Adams. Newport architects George C. Mason and Son designed the house in 1873, and General Henry Jackson Hunt was the first in a long line of military officers to live here.
The most famous resident was President Dwight D. Eisenhower, for whom the house is named. President Eisenhower vacationed here during the late summer of 1958 and 1960. At first, the president was quartered at the Naval War College on Coasters Harbor Island. But golf was Ike’s passion, and given Eisenhower House’s location near the Newport Country Club golf course, this became the president’s Summer White House.
The United States Navy transferred Fort Adams and Eisenhower House to the State of Rhode Island in 1964 for use as a state park. Today Eisenhower House is a historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the property is the scene of many public and social events.
