The New Gala Trend...The Open House

The American Folk Art Museum presents Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts From the collection of Joanna Semel Rose

Open To The Public March 25 -30, 2011

Infinite Variety, the American Folk Art Museum’s spectacular installation of 651 red and white American quilts is just that. Presented in the cavernous space of the Park Avenue Armory, the exhibition is like the city itself, monumental, majestic and bold. The quilts are arrayed in gravity defying spirals which climb 60 feet in an overwhelming display, transforming works of intimate delicacy into a stunning architectural statement. Infinite Variety is very much of the moment and yet the quilts from which it has been assembled are timeless.

It was the perfect backdrop for the Museums Annual Gala!

The quilts are from the collection of Joanna Semel Rose, an art collector, intellectual, prominent philanthropist, and doyenne of a leading New York real estate family. Formerly the chairperson of the Partisan Review and rumored to be involved with the (top secret) selection process for the MacArthur Fellowships, she is a quintessential New Yorker.

When asked by her husband Daniel Rose what she wanted for her 80th birthday she suggested this gift for herself and the city, to have her quilts displayed where she (and everyone else) could see them all at the same moment. Due to the Roses’ generosity, this “hottest ticket in town” is open to the public and free of charge.

A Folk Art Welcome

This Weekend A Newport Affaire did an A Folk Art Welcome Party for a couple who embraced Newport and its history.
So I created Folk Art Topiary in a vintage crock with red apples, rosehips, green acorns and seeded eucalyptus.
Nantucket baskets were filled with the same with small folk art sayings like “Do you like to dance?” “ Welcome friends” and “Sit long talk much!”. Small pond yachts were alternated on the cocktail tables.

Preston Bailey Blogs

I have to tell you that working on a Preston Bailey Wedding with Marcy Blum was a great highlight in my career! Memorial Day 2006 in Newport, I worked with them on local logistics for a wedding weekend held at Rosecliff. He is a amazing artist and I envy the volume of flowers he gets to paint with.

When I was with Bizbash Media, we honored him in to The Event Style Hall of Fame.
Chris Giftos the Floral Designer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art said to me looking at one of Prestons live florial murals,
“I workied at the MET for over 40 years , Why didn’t I think of that! “
I am so exited to share with you his blog, that houses some of his inspiration and even a little insite to his technique.
Kudos to a master of design.
I am honored to have him as my first Florial Desiger of the Month at my Newport Weddings Blog

Go Go A Gobo!

I love Gobos.
It must be my theatre background.

They can Customize dance floor,
make a ballroom look like a forest
or inscribe in light, your brand new monogram.

They are quite inexpensive, and are very easy to install.
But do check with your lighting designer before you order.
They come in different sizes as well in glass or die cut metal.

Recently I worked with a New York bride that had her Scottish Crest created for the wedding.
I suggested we have a custom gobo made for the dance floor.

It added that extra special Bling to her Highland Fling!

You can see the rest of the wedding at www.anewyorkaffaire.com

Yellow ... Its every where

I was in the shops at Time Warner yesterday and YELLOW was everywhere!

J. Crew, Bebe, Bloomingdales, even Pottery Barn, is featuring this color.

We heard a lot about it last year at The Special Event trade show, but only the couture linen Company Resource One was showing yellow last year.

Will you be using this color way at your wedding?
