"One Special Summer"

"One Special Summer" was written and illustrated by Jacqueline and Lee Bouvier, a truly timeless duo who set the bar for classic overseas adventure!

The book, originally published in 1974 and just recently republished, was a travel journal and memoir compiled with illustrations and poetry from Jackie and writings from her younger sister Lee. The girls gave the journal to their mother as a thank you gift for allowing them to take the trip at such young ages without a chaperone! Lee, then 18, gives a witty tongue-in-cheek account of the joys and agonies they encountered on their Grand Tour while Jackie, then 22, illustrates with charming nostalgia! There are quite a few laughs in store as the girls recount their social embarrassments while being entertained by European counts and ambassadors; from gorging themselves on hors d'oeuvres to singing lessons gone badly amiss in Venice! Of course, all throughout the journal the girls give reassurance of their best behavior while abroad as Lee explains, "Don't worry – we won't come home with liver trouble! We eat and drink terribly sensibly..." and that they "...never go out in big cities except in what we would wear to church in Newport on Sundays..."

A wedding Toast For Jack

After cutting the wedding cake, Jackie Kennedy acknowledged the toasts gracefully, then noted that her mother had always told her to wait and judge a man by his correspondence.
With quiet humor, she held up a postcard from Bermuda with a picture of a passion flower.
On the back was scrawled: "Wish you were here. Cheers. Jack." "
This," said Jackie, "is my entire correspondence from Jack."

A short toast with humor and charm goes a long way!

I feel like I hit the jackpot tonight! I found a group of photos shot by Lisa Larsen from the Kennedy wedding.
It was my thought that Toni Frissell was the official photgrapher for the wedding. I guess the family asked a couple of talented women photographers to shoot the wedding that day!

Sea Joy

I found this charming poem by Jackie Kennedy when she was just ten years old.

Titled "Sea Joy."

When I go down by the sandy shore
I can think of nothing I want more
Than to live by the booming blue sea
As the seagulls flutter round about me
I can run about when the tide is out
With the wind and the sand and the sea all about
And the seagulls are swirling and diving for fish.
Oh – to live by the sea is my only wish.

It's so interesting that she found a fellow who so loved the sea as much as she did.

Jacqueline Kennedy's Wedding Bracelet was designed by JFK and Jackie together before their wedding in 1953. Jackie contributed the pearls and diamonds, while John added the two nautical ropes, representing his family's love of the sea.

Lilly Pulitzer

It all started with a juice stand in Palm Beach. Lilly, a young, sassy New York socialite had eloped with Peter Pulitzer, grandson of thePulitzer Prize's Joseph Pulitzer and settled in Palm Beach to live the life of the rich and famous. Peter owned several Florida citrus groves, but Lilly needed a project of her own. So in the late 1950's, with Peter's produce, she opened a juice stand on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.
Lilly Pulitzer's business was a hit, but squeezing oranges, lemons, limes, and pink grapefruit made a mess of her clothes. Realizing that she needed a juice stand uniform, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a dress that would camouflage the stains. The result? A comfortable sleeveless shift made of bright, colorful printed cotton - pink, green, yellow and orange. The dress even had custom dressmaker details like lining and lace seam bindings. It was perfect for the job and became Lilly's first Classic Shift.
Although her customers liked Lilly's juice, they loved her dress. When people began to ask if they could buy the dress, Lilly had a few more made up to sell in the stand. Soon Lilly was selling more dresses than juice, so she decided to stop squeezing and to focus on designing and selling her "Lillys." Before long, Jackie Kennedy, an old school chum, began wearing Lillys and, as First Lady, was featured in Life Magazine wearing a Classic Shift. Then, of course, everyone wanted one and Lilly Pulitzer® became a fashion sensation.

Through the sixties and seventies, the Lilly Pulitzer line was the unofficial uniform of the affluent at play. Lilly Pulitzer stores sprang up in the favorite resorts of the jet set and Lilly's pink and green colors became the banner of the preppy lifestyle.

Lilly is still a staple of the "Newportiant'" life style.

Jackie Kennedy's wedding gown designer, Ann Lowe

The wedding gown on the right was worn by Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, the day she married John F Kennedy. It is a part of African-American History. Why? This dress was designed by African-American fashion designer Ann Lowe.

Ann Lowe was born in Alabama in 1899, the daughter and granddaughter of dressmakers who designed for Alabama's first ladies. When Ann was 16 her mother passed away, and Ann completed the projects her mother had been working on. She then went on to design school in New York, where she was shunned by her white classmates. She didn't let them get to her. Instead, she concentrated on her studies. It paid off. Her customers included the DuPonts, Roosevelts, Posts, Biddles, Rockefellers, Auchinclosses, and other families that were listed in the Social Register. They loved her work. She was known as "society's best kept scecret," because, of course, no one would admit their clothing was being designed by a black woman. I can't help but wonder how different her life and career would have been today. Perhaps she would have been as well known and has wealthy as Vera Wang.

Things were, indeed, difficult for Ms Lowe. She never gave up, however, especially when a ruptured water line flooded her store 10 days before the future First Lady's wedding, destroying the dress and all others that had been made for the occasion. But Ms Lowe managed to remake all the dresses in time for the wedding. Later, in 1962 she lost her store due to back taxes, and lost her eye due to glaucoma. After the glaucoma surgery, when she was released from the hospital, she found that an annonymous benefactor had paid her all her debts. (The Kennedys, perhaps?) However, she developed cataracts in her other eye. Luckily, surgery saved the eye and she went ahead with plans to open a store on Madision Avenue. She retired in the '70s and passed away in the early '80s.

I have seen pictures of the wedding dress before, but they were always side views. I had thought there was only one circle detail on the side, but they seem to be all around the dress. To be honest, I don't really care for the dress. (Neither did Jackie, I've read. Her mother insisted that she wear it.) However, none of that matters today. What matters is that Ann Lowe be recognized for who she is: an African-American Fashion Pioneer.
